COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina nonprofit that advocates for the poor is honoring U.S. Rep. James Clyburn.

The Appleseed Legal Justice Center's board of directors has named the Democratic congressman its 2011 Advocate of the Year. The group will honor Clyburn at a reception Tuesday night.

Since 2006, Appleseed has chosen one South Carolinian whose life's work the group believes exemplifies a commitment to justice, families and children in the state. Past honorees include former Democratic U.S. Rep. John Spratt and attorney I.S. Leevy Johnson.

Appleseed's board says Clyburn is a champion for those who often don't have a voice.

Clyburn is the only Democrat in South Carolina's congressional delegation. He is assistant Democratic leader and the third-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House.
