(AP) -- A South Carolina Republican House panel plans to meet and discuss tax law changes.

The panel meeting Monday is trying to come up with tax law changes that can get through the Legislature.

Legislators ignored the recommendations made by an independent panel last year. The panel urged reshaping South Carolina's tax system by eliminating tax breaks that included obscure breaks from collecting the state's sales tax.

The proposal called for an overall reduction in tax rates but collecting taxes from more sales.

The Republican-controlled Legislature has approved big tax increases during the past two years. In 2010 they approved raising the nation's lowest cigarette tax and have used that money mostly to pay for Medicaid. Lawmakers also raised unemployment taxes for businesses.
