(AP) -- South Carolina employers will be getting refund checks or future credits to recover higher unemployment insurance premiums they paid.

The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce said Thursday that companies that paid $22 million in higher premiums in the second quarter of this year can get refunds or credits on future payments beginning Oct. 1.

The agency says businesses that overpaid $65 million in the first quarter of this year will receive credit on future bills.

The money is coming back to South Carolina businesses after the Legislature used $146 million in surplus cash to repay federal loans.

The state had to borrow nearly $1 billion from the federal government to keep unemployment checks going to workers during the Great Recession.
