A 49-year-old man from Longs died Wednesday after refusing to pullover for an Horry County police officer and crashing his motorcycle into a ditch, according to an Horry County police report.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge identifies the man as Hartford Dwayne Holmes of Longs.

Holmes was driving his motorcycle at speeds in excess of 100 mph on Highway 9 around 12:30 a.m., police said.

An officer turned on his blue lights and started to pursue him.

Holmes ignored the blue lights and sirens, failed to slow down, and was weaving in and out of traffic, the report said.

When approaching the Highway 9 and Olive Drive intersection, Homes looked over his shoulder and gestured to the officer with his left arm before crashing into a ditch, police said.

He lost his helmet in the crash. He was taken to Loris Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
