On September 11th, 2011, in full turnout gear, a group of firefighters from the North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety, paid tribute to the firefighters who died in the September 11th atttacks.
They began their symbolic walk on the beach at 48th Avenue South and headed north to the Cherry Grove point, a distance of about nine miles.
The firefighters came up with the idea Saturday, as they helped the city with the North Myrtle Beach Triathlon. They wanted to find a way to honor the memories of their brothers and sisters who perished and those who continued to work at the site of the World Trade Center attacks.
North Myrtle Beach Fire Captain Ken Frye said, "Certainly, it’s a last minute idea but it comes straight from the heart.”
Frye said he suggested the firefighters each walk part of the distance, but the firefighters were determined to make the walk together.
“Turnout gear is very heavy and hot,” Frye said, “but their perspective is that those who responded to the September 11 attacks endured far more, as did their families.”###
