Grand Strand city and county leaders are working on a plan to continue research into dead zones in the ocean.
Dead zones are areas of hypoxia, a lack of oxygen in the water that can lead to fish kills and other marine problems.
At Wednesday's Grand Strand Coastal Alliance meeting, local city and county leaders discussed using storm water funding to continue monitoring dead zones. Federal grants that have paid for the research in the past are quickly running out.
The meeting lacked a quorum, so no vote was taken, but Surfside Beach Mayor Allen Deaton said there was a consensus among leaders to continue the research and potentially add two monitoring stations.
Currently, Apache Pier has the only local station for monitoring oxygen levels.
