COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the fatal shooting of a man by a Columbia police officer after a football game.

Authorities say the Palmetto Classic game between Benedict and Virginia Union was ending when gunshots rang out about 8 p.m. Saturday.

Chief Randy Scott says Columbia police officers who responded to reports of numerous shots being fired found several people exchanging gunfire in a large crowd. He says one man ran from the crowd while shooting at police and was shot and killed. Killed was 24-year-old Dexter Lamar Addison.

Scott says the officer's actions saved other people's lives.

The officer wasn't injured.
