COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Advocates for people with disabilities say a plan to give free rides to South Carolina residents who need state-approved photo identification at the state Department of Motor Vehicles is discriminatory.
The State reported that Gov. Nikki Haley backs the plan to provide free rides Sept. 28. A state law would require all voters to present a state-approved photo ID at the polls. The U.S. Justice Department must sign off on the law.
DMV's website says the rides are available only to those who walk on their own or with a walker or cane. Advocacy groups say denying rides to people with physical handicaps violates federal law.
A DMV spokeswoman says the agency staff isn't medically trained to deal with people in wheelchairs.
