(AP) -- Extensive erosion from Hurricane Irene has prompted the closure of Folly Beach County Park near Charleston for the rest of 2011.

Park officials said Friday that last week's storm caused damage to boardwalks at the park and a structural check is needed before it can be determined what must be done to reopen it to the general public.

A shelter at the park on the southwest end of the island will remain open for rentals, although those renting the shelter will be restricted to the shelter area and a small section of beach.

The county's Edwin S. Taylor fishing pier farther north on Folly Beach remains open.
