(AP) -- EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - High tide is combining with water pushed ashore from Hurricane Irene to cause problems at some of South Carolina's beaches.

A fire chief at Edisto Beach told the National Weather Service that 12-foot waves were breaking on Edisto Beach around 6 p.m. Friday and water and sand were covering part of the oceanfront road on the island.

Up the coast at Folly Beach, the weather service reported the rising tide and pounding waves were eroding the dunes.
