While our Thursday forecast still appears to be a fairly typical August day with plenty of heat, humidity and a few afternoon storms, we still need to keep a watchful eye on Hurricane Irene. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Horry and Georgetown counties, but the forecast has not changed. Hurricane Irene is still a major Category 3 hurricane and could even strengthen over the next 24 hours to a Category 4. The forecast track still takes Irene through the Bahamas and making a gradual turn to the North then East of the South Carolina coastline. It is forecast to head toward the Outer Banks of NC and make landfall near there. While the major impacts will miss us to the North and East, we will still see minor impacts. Rip current risks will remain high through the weekend. Rain chances will increase during Friday and Saturday woth windy conditions possible. Head over to our Tropical Update page where you can get the latest forecast and how it will effect our area.. While you're there you can use our new Interactive Hurricane Tracker to track Irene or newly formed Tropical Depression #10 that just moved off of the west coast of Africa.
