The state Department of Transportation is delaying about $24 million in road projects in 18 counties as it tries to resolve its cash flow problems.

Agency officials announced their plans Thursday to delay resurfacing and pavement work.

Transportation secretary Robert St. Onge acknowledges the agency needs to keep better track of its money. The state's largest agency has a budget of $1.1 billion.

A $52 million advance from the Federal Highway Administration is allowing the agency to cover $680,000 in contractor payments already overdue and another $39 million nearly overdue. The state requires invoices to be paid within 30 working days.

The commission that oversees the agency voted 4-3 to continue with plans to borrow $344 million for five projects, including a new interstate linking Myrtle Beach to Interstate 95.
