Police in a North Carolina town say a man entrusted with watching the home of a soldier deployed to Afghanistan sold dozens of the soldier's belongings before turning up dead.
The Daily Record of Dunn reports that police in Erwin are investigating the death earlier this month of Neil Phillips. Phillips was found dead with a gun in a local cemetery.
Before he died, police were preparing to arrest him for selling cars, firearms and other things belonging to a soldier whose house Phillips had agreed to watch.
Lt. Bill Morris says Phillips resembled the soldier enough to pass himself off as the man, who is still in Afghanistan.
The scam unraveled after the soldier was informed that his house had been put up for sale on the Internet.
