The school resource officer who 15-year-old Christian Helms shot at last September is talking for the first time since last week's sentencing.
Officer Erik Karney says he hopes he can put everything behind him now that Helms has been sentenced.Karney received an award from Horry County Council Tuesday night.
The council issued a proclamation for Karney's outstanding service.
Police say Karney disarmed a then 14-year-old Helms last September when the teenager brought bombs and a gun to school.
Karney says he doesn't consider himself a hero.
"I still go back to that day and look at things as though I did what I had to do and I wouldn't have made it any different. I don't consider myself a hero. I know a lot of people look at things differently, but I just did the best job I could that day, and I'm going to continue to do the same," said Karney.
Karney says he's relieved now that the Helms trial is over.
"It's nice to be able to put everything behind me and move on. Especially for my family its been really tough on them," he said.
He adds that it has been especially hard on his wife and kids dealing with everything from getting off work for court dates to explaining to his children the circumstances of the trial.
Christian Helms was sentenced to six years in prison.
