(AP) -- The University of South Carolina expects the largest freshmen class ever when dorms open Saturday.

The Columbia campus expects about 4,500 freshmen for the fall semester and could also top 30,000 students for the first time when the count is completed once classes begin.

The average SAT score for the new freshmen is expected to be 1,198, up 10 points from the 2010 fall class.

Those entering the Honors College are expected to have an average 1,427 on the SAT, up 11 points from the previous year.

Clemson University expects an estimated freshman class of about 3,000 students, about the same as last year.

Undergraduate admissions director Robert Barkley says the estimated average SAT score for those students is 1,230, about the same as last year.
