Lightning is believed to be the cause of a fire that started Sunday at University Place apartments near Coastal Carolina University.

The Conway Fire Department and Horry County Fire Rescue responded to the fire around 3:30 p.m.

Heavy smoke and flames could be seen pouring out of the roof of building 128.

Conway Fire Chief Rick Baker said all probabilities point to lightning striking the top of the building. He said it was unoccupied at the time and the fire started at the height of Sunday's thunderstorm.

CCU campus security said students move into the buildings on August 19. The college will contact 58 students about new housing assignments for the fall. CCU says it will be able to accommodate them at other student residences.

Those staying nearby were evacuated.
