DILLON COUNTY --
The Dillon County sheriff is joining the fight to ban bath salts used as synthetic drugs in his county.
Sheriff Major Hulon says several stores in Dillon County are selling the bath salts. He says mental health professionals are seeing a rise in cases of people getting high off the legal substances.
Dillon County Council members say they support the sheriff, but first must make sure they have the legal authority to pass an ordinance to ban them.
"Certainly we are concerned about it," said Dillon County Council Chairman, Archie Scott, "We got our attorney looking into it and we want to hold hands, every council member, wants to hold hands with our local law enforcement with those that are concerned in the community to stop this, but we want to make sure we got the legal way about it."
A bill was introduced in the State House in March classifying bath salts as schedule one controlled substances. The bill was never debated and is in the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
