The South Carolina Forestry Commission says it rained about one inch at its staging area for what they call the Hornet Fire. Now, crews are stuck with muddy conditions for fighting the fire.
The fire has burned 1,374 acres in the Carolina Forest area of Horry County since it started 4th of July weekend. It remains 70 percent contained.
The incident commander toured the fire area Tuesday morning. He says in some areas, the fire is burning two feed deep in the soil.
Crews don't plan to do any work on the fire until after lunch Tuesday in order to give the area time to drain. They won't be doing any plowing because its so muddy. They will use bulldozers to push down the vegetation to make it harder for the fire to climb up when things dry out in a few days. Crews will also be hosing water onto hot spots from fire track vehicles.
The Forestry Commission says no homes are threatened.
It reminds you the burning ban for Horry, Marion, and Georgetown counties remains in effect. And, the Red Flag Fire Alert remains in effect for all other South Carolina counties.
