(AP) -- South Carolina U.S. Rep. Tim Scott says he's optimistic that Congress will reach an agreement on raising the nation's debt ceiling.
But Scott says he's not sure that he may be able to vote for it.
Scott told reporters in North Charleston on Monday that he will oppose any debt ceiling plan that includes an increase in taxes. He says the focus of the federal government needs to be on cutting spending.
Scott says raising the debt ceiling is important but even if it is not approved, there will be enough money to continue to operate essential federal government services.
Scott has said his office has been logging dozens of calls and emails every day about the debt ceiling, and it's the top subject at town hall meetings with voters.
