SC legislators seek US House district line support

South Carolina Senate leaders are trying to rally support for a compromise version of a new map for U.S. House seats that includes a new, seventh district.

Legislators expect to meet Tuesday to debate redistricting plans.

Last month, the Senate rejected the version of the proposed lines the House had approved. Senate Republican leaders were then surprised when their proposal was upstaged by a plan backed by Democrats and several Republicans.

Sens. Larry Martin and Glenn McConnell said last week they hoped to have enough votes to approve the compromise they had been working on with the House.

Redistricting is required every decade to make sure political lines reflect population changes. South Carolina picked up a new seat because it gained population in the 2010 Census.
