Florence School District 4, which is the Timmonsville schools, did not get a good report on the PASS test scores released Friday.
Last school year, nearly 90 percent of all third graders in Timmonsville didn't meet the standards in science. Only 13 percent of them passed math. In seventh grade, only a third of them passed English and about 22 percent passed social studies. Almost 70 percent of eighth graders didn't meet state standards in English. Parents in Timmonsville say the district and its financial problems are to blame. In March, the district cut 19 positions to save money. A financial consultant told the school board last month that the district has operated with a deficit for four years and now they're technically broke.
One parent told us she doesn't blame the teachers. She thinks the low scores are a direct result of the district's financial problems. "It's not that we don't have excellent teachers, they don't have what they need. They don't have the materials they need to teach. From what I've been told, our books are outdated. I know that a lot of their smart boards don't work," said Misty Owens.
School administrators were off Friday and couldn't be reached for a comment on the scores.
