State Representative Alan Clemmons recognized some Horry County students for their work to bring awareness of abandoned boats.
Makayla Arteaga, Christian Hanna, Bethany Slayton and Coach Michelle Ruthenberg make up the River Rangers.
They learned many boat owners struggle to make payments and afford dock fees and simply abandon their boats.
Because they couldn't remove the boats themselves, they wanted to make the community aware of the problem. Due to their work, Horry County has started removing abandoned boats from the waterways.
Representative Clemmons says, "These young ladies have given dividend early on in their lives. They paid the dividend to their community and their state early on. I expect we'll see great things out of these ladies in the years to come."
The River Rangers won a trip to Disney World and a $25,000 grant from the Columbus Foundation for their efforts.
