CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - A small group of college teachers from around the country are participating in a Harvard program aimed at getting more black history into the classroom and research projects.
The summer program at the university's W.E.B. Du Bois Institute brought the teachers to Cambridge this month for three weeks of intense training.
Cheryl Carpenter, an English instructor at Alabama A&M, said the program has given her ideas on providing the historical context of books by black writers that she requires students to read.
The program was founded in the mid-1990s by institute director Henry Louis Gates Jr., University of South Carolina history professor Patricia Sullivan, and University of California-Berkeley history professor Waldo Martin.
