North Myrtle Beach hopes to attract more visitors and that may include a what some call a "tourism tax."
Members of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce talked about their campaign to attract more tourists, called "Build North Myrtle Beach," at the annual Chamber Chairman's Luncheon Thursday.
They announced they plan to take the lead to get a one percent tourism development fee passed for the City of North Myrtle Beach.
The new chairman, Bubba Collins said, "What we're trying to do is get more money to advertise to get more people to come and stay with us. We have some money in there for our building, just to promote this area and businesses and also to diversify our economy."
The tax isn't a new talking point in North Myrtle Beach. It was discussed last fall at a meeting where some residents voiced their opposition.
Myrtle Beach passed the sales tax increase and began collecting it in August of 2009.
The North Myrtle Beach Chamber also said Thursday it hopes to recruit a major attraction and plans to research what attraction would be best for the area.
