(AP) -- Columbia police think a 9-month-old baby boy died after being left in a car outside his home.

Police say the boy's relatives found him in the car Sunday afternoon. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says Jayden Davis died of overheating. Police say the boy was in the car for four hours.

Police Chief Randy Scott says Jayden's father dropped the mother off at work and returned to the family's apartment complex, leaving the boy in a safety seat in the car.

The National Weather Service reported a high temperature of 98 degrees shortly before 5 p.m.

No charges have been filed. Police are investigating.
