More than 100 people came out for the unveiling of a historical marker at Whittemore Park Middle School Saturday afternoon.
Past class members of Whittemore School unveiled the historical plaque now standing outside the school off Wright street in Conway. The school was originally founded in 1870 and was one of the first African American high schools in Horry County. According to the marker the school educated elementary and high school students.
Alumni, teachers, local and state politicians spoke and sang at the unveiling today.
"(This) monument that is put in place now will be a reminder to future generations of what we have done on this site in the past.," State Senator Dick Elliot said.
Right before the unveiling, the group also sang the school's Alma Mater.
Horry County Schools were desegregated in 1970.
