(AP) -- South Carolina legislators could give final approval to an illegal immigration bill during their wrap-up session.

Legislators are set to complete work on the budget and redrawn election districts during the session that starts Tuesday.

But senators have also pledged to resume debate on a bill to require police officers to try to check suspects' immigration status after they're stopped for something else.

The Senate wants to tweak existing law that penalizes businesses for hiring illegal workers. Officials want to bring that 2008 law in line with last month's U.S Supreme Court ruling on anti-immigration laws.

Republican senators want to make the changes and send the bill back to the House for agreement.
