Richland County authorities say a 14-month-old child was sent to intensive care after the toddler was thrown from a speeding car following an alleged shoplifting attempt.

Sheriff's deputies say the child suffered serious injuries including broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and abrasions during the Thursday night getaway from a Kmart store in Columbia.

Deputies say two women were confronted by security guards who thought they were stealing from the store. One of the women ran to a car where a third woman was waiting.

Authorities say the child was not restrained in the car and was thrown out as the car took off.

Deputies have not released the women's names or how they are related to the child. One of the women has been arrested.
