You may have seen a lot of emergency workers on the road Tuesday in Horry and Marion counties. They were practicing lane reversals which would be used during a hurricane evacuation.

Crews put cones along Highways 501 and 544 to make sure they have the manpower and resources in a real evacuation.

The state Public Safety Department holds the drill each year for all three major coastal areas.

"It takes a lot of work to reverse lanes and evacuate a lot of people from the coast. That's why its so important to do this now when everything's quiet, there's no emergency. To be able to look at things, make sure there's no changes from last year and if there needs to be, we can make those today," Lance Corporal Sonny Collins told NewsChannel 15.

Emergency workers keep up with the hotel and rental property occupancy rate so they have an idea of how many people they would have to get off the coast.
