BLENHEIM -- Leadership South Carolina made a special presentation to Blenheim Elementary/Middle School Friday.
The group partnered with Walmart to give the school $10,000. The school will use the money to provide clothing and hygiene items for students in need.
Officials with Leadership South Carolina say they chose the school, which is in Marlboro County, because it was identified as Palmetto Priority School in 2009. It's a statewide initiative that works to help schools meet criteria set forth in the South Carolina Education Accountability Act.
The schools on the list have an average poverty rate of 94 percent. The initiative is also meant to prevent a state takeover of the schools. If the schools don't meet the criteria, then they will be taken over by the state.
Leadership South Carolina adopted Blenheim Elementary/Middle School last October. Since then, the group donated eight park benches, two athletic bleachers, four large utility carts and reorganized the music/art classrooms and the science lab.
Blenheim Elementary/Middle School serves about 320 students in grades K-8.
