A Williamsburg County man is behind bars and a woman is recovering in the hospital, following a high speed chase Friday morning.

It started at a checkpoint at Pope and Muddy Creek Roads in Williamsburg County. Deputies say the driver took off and led them on a four mile chase.

Deputies called off the chase after losing sight of the car.

A short time later, a woman was seen crawling out of the woods near a wrecked car. Deputies say the woman was the passenger in the car involved in the chase. The driver wrecked the car after he lost control.

The woman was airlifted to MUSC in Charleston. The driver was arrested after being treated at an area hospital.

The suspects name have not been released.
