A teacher at Burgess Elementary School in Horry County has been named the 2011 South Carolina History Teacher of the Year.
Margaret Bounds has been teaching in the Horry County School District for five years.
While working at Burgess Elementary, she initiated a fourth-grade "Colonial Day" and created replicas of Native American and colonial games.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the History Channel and Preserve America sponsor the award.
Bounds will receive $1,000 and is now eligible to be named National History Teacher of the Year.
Burgess Elementary School's library will also receive a history books and educational materials from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the History Channel. Bounds will also receive an invitation to a Gilder Lehrman summer seminar, and Burgess Elementary will be named a Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School.
"This award gives us the chance to recognize great history teachers across the country," said Lesley S. Hermann, Executive Director of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, in a press release. "It puts exceptional educators front and center."
The National History Teacher of the Year Award started in 2004 to promote the teaching of American history in classrooms across the United States.
