(AP) -- \COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Senate has postponed debating illegal immigration until later this month.

Senators voted Thursday to carry it over until they return June 14 for a special session.

Senators will attempt to tweak current state law that penalizes businesses for hiring illegal workers. The state's labor director and attorney general want legislators to bring the 2008 law in line with last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

The changes would be tacked onto a bill that requires officers to try to check suspects' immigration status. That bill is back in the Senate after the House approved its version last week. Because both chambers have approved separate versions, that bill can be taken up in the limited special session.

State law requires that the regular session end at 5 p.m. Thursday.
