Florence is expanding a program that feeds students during the summer.
Mayor Stephen Wukela announced Tuesday the school district, recreation department and church groups are partnering for the summer feeding program. Their collaboration is helping to provide 27 sites in Florence County where kids can get a free breakfast and lunch during the summer.
The mayor says this will help deter juvenile crime and help families who may be struggling in these hard times.
"It's incumbent, I think, on the city and the mayor's coalition with the school district and these other non-profits to try and fill in that gap. It's good for these young people and it's good for the community as well," Mayor Wukela said.
Some of the sites will start serving students as early as Wednesday morning from the age of 18-years-old or younger.
