A 39-year-old man in town for the weekend's bikefest activities died Saturday night after his bike crashed into an SUV at Highway 501 and Robert Grissom Parkway, Horry County Coroner Robert Edge tells Newschannel 15.

Elbert Mitchell III, of Durham, North Carolina was pronounced dead at 10:51 Saturday night at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He died from internal injuries from the crash.

Edge says that Mitchell had been in town for the weekend with several friends from work for the festival, but had left them to attend a cookout Saturday night.

The friends told Edge they assumed the cookout was somewhere around Robert Grissom Parkway, where Mitchell had been when he crashed.

Since 1997 Mitchell worked as an officer with Durham Police.

Edge says Mrytle Beach Police called in the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT team to investigate the crash Saturday night.
