Memorial Day is set aside each year to honor service men and women who died while in military service.

Saturday afternoon the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans held a funeral for John Johnston Anderson because he never received one.

Organizer Terry Carter says the Confederate soldier died in Cold Harbor, Virginia.

"My understanding is that he was struck by a large projectile and blown in two and buried in really two graves," added Carter.

About 50 people, including relatives, attended the service this afternoon.

Ceremony participants fired three mortars and placed a wreath at each marker for the fallen soldiers.

Johnston is one of seven soldiers buried at Spring Branch Cemetery in Horry County.

Crosses were placed in their honor.
