Socastee High School's Robotics Team won first place at the second annual Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE)  competition for Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV).

The team's mission was to model the role played by remotely operated vehicles in the Gulf oil spill.

They had to collect organisms and water samples and cap and shut off a pipe.

This year's competition was hosted by Coastal Carolina University and the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology.

The team now moves onto the international competition at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas next month. Teams from all over the world will compete.
