Back in February we asked a simple question. Would you stop someone who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol from getting behind the wheel. We used two actors, Blue, a local radio DJ, and Christine Vernon, who does community theater around the area.
We invited them back for a story about litter on the beach. Blue and Christine would set up a picnic in front of other people on the beach, then leave their trash. Would people stop them, order them to pick it up, or do nothing?
Not only is garbage on the beach an eyesore, it's also a threat to creatures who make their home there.
Curtis Joyner works in Ocean and Coastal Resource Management with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. He says trash left on the beach can hurt of even kill wild life and sea life. He says, "I've seen sea turtles entangled in plastic bags, birds ingesting forks and knives."
Watch parts one and two of our special report to find out how people reacted to our actors trashing the beach.
