(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A Newberry County mother has been arrested after deputies say she lied about her 15-year-old daughter having cancer and took donations for the child's treatment.
Sheriff Lee Foster said 35-year-old Angela Ann Chapman of Whitmire was arrested Wednesday and charged with obtaining goods under false pretenses.
Foster says Chapman told people that her daughter had been diagnosed with cancer and was treated at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., earlier this month.
Foster wouldn't say if the girl knew about the fraud but did say that a juvenile had been charged in Family Court related to the case.
Deputies say the woman collected at least $1,200.
Chapman did not return a message left Thursday at a phone number for her.
