Hundreds gathered Wednesday night for the welcome home celebration for 89 World War II veterans returning from Washington, D.C.
This is the second Honor Flight from Myrtle Beach. More than 200 family members, friends, and dozens of veterans support groups were at the Myrtle Beach International airport Wednesday. The crowd was even bigger than the some 200 well-wishers who gathered at MYR in November for the inaugural Myrtle Beach Honor Flight.
The group of World War II veterans flew for free to the nation's capitol as part of an Honor Flight to see a WWII memorial that was unveiled 6 years ago at the National Mall. Since the number of men who fought in WWII are aging, there's been a big push to get all of those who served to see the wall.
Through the program, the group visits the monument built in their honor for the first time. It costs around $65,000 to cover all the expenses. That includes travel, meals, and medical staff. Many of those who made the journey would not be able to see the memorial if it wasn't for the program.
