In 2008, Air Medical Transport had its worst year in history after losing 24 members in crashes. Three of those victims died in South Carolina.

Air Medical Transport offers ambulance services by helicopter.

"On September 5, 2009 we lost Pilot Patrick Walters, Flight Paramedic Claxton Dove and Flight Nurse Diana Conners, in a crash in Georgetown. When one of these terrible events happen, we come together," Mary Ann Melville, President of the Air Medical Memorial said.

That's just what community members, a color guard, crash survivors and emergency responders did Thursday afternoon at the True Blue Golf Plantation in Pawley's Island.

"This is the inaugural Fallen Angels Charity Golf Tournament benefiting the Air Medical Memorial which is a 501 C3 non-profit organization," Melville added.

The mission of the Memorial is to honor Air Medical Flight Crews who lost their lives while serving the community.

"Building the Air Medical Memorial fulfills that promise to never forget. We're doing this for the families," Melville said.

The Memorial's groundbreaking is scheduled June 23, 2011 outside of Denver in Littleton, Colorado. Depending on fundraising, it's expected to be dedicated sometime in 2012.

Those who participated in the tournament's two-day, four person scramble donated generously to the cause and acknowledged the importance the Memorial serves to those who have lost their lives doing their jobs.

"We'll never forget their sacrifice, never forget their care to their patients and the service they gave their community," Melville said.
