COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina senators are close to wrapping up debate on $6 billion spending plan for the new fiscal year.

When debate resumes Thursday, they have a handful of sections of the proposed budget to vote on before sending the bill back to the House.

Senators on Wednesday approved plans to add $105 million to school budgets. That came after hours of arguments that extra state cash should be used to give businesses tax breaks, send the money to income taxpayers in a rebate or used to reduce debt.

After four weeks of Senate budget debate, it is now unclear whether the House and Senate can work out a compromise version of the spending plan and act on any vetoes from Gov. Nikki Haley before adjournment on June 2nd.
