(AP) -- Dozens of people have entered a federal program allowing them to do community service as punishment for their roles in a scheme that defrauded South Carolina's social services agency of millions of dollars.

Federal prosecutors say eight more defendants were arraigned Wednesday on charges of theft of government property.

The Department of Social Services' former finance director is serving 10 years in prison for stealing more than $5 million from the agency. Authorities say Paul Moore and another man recruited hundreds of people to cash checks made out to them from agency funds. The recruits then cashed the checks, kept some money for themselves and returned the rest to Moore.

Prosecutors say 70 people are doing 100 hours each of community service and paying back their shares of the money.
