South Carolina Highway Patrol says in the past ten days four pedestrians have been hit by vehicles in South Carolina, and three of those pedestrians died.
Trooper Sonny Collins says most pedestrian accidents happen during the morning and afternoon peak travel time. Most pedestrian deaths happen at night.
Highway Patrol says when it comes to pedestrian accidents in South Carolina, the pedestrians are at fault 63% of the time. The primary mistake - walking in the road illegally and improper crossing of roadways.
South Carolina law states that pedestrians must walk on the shoulder of the highway. Collins suggests that you wear light reflective material if you are walking at night. Never walk along the road if you've been drinking. Always walk on the left shoulder facing traffic closest to you.
