Two local volunteers receive recognition for service.
South Carolina's top two youth volunteers were honored Sunday night at the 16th Annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards ceremony in Washington DC.
Amanda Thomas, 17, of Anderson, was honored for organizing two community donation drives that raised more than $10,000 worth of clothing, toiletries and household furnishings for a local shelter for victims of domestic violence.
Christian Hanna, 12, of Conway, was honored for picking up trash along the Waccamaw River for the past two years to help make it safer and more beautiful for the animals and people who use it.
Thomas and Hanna each received an award of $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip with their parents to Washington, D.C.for the award ceremony.
Both students received personal congratulations from Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon.
