ORANGEBURG, SC (AP) -- Tuition will be going up 4 percent in the fall at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. Trustee voted on the increase Thursday.

In-state students will pay an extra $180 per semester. Out-of-state students will pay an additional $350.

Vice president of finance John Smalls says each 1 percent increase in tuition provides the school with an additional $468,000.

Food service costs will increase 1.6 percent. But housing fees will be reduced by $250 per semester for most dorms.

The school's budget is based on revenue projections of $69 million and an enrollment of 4,500 students.

The university handled a shortfall of several million dollars this year by freezing salaries and cutting costs.
