COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina legislators have worked out differences on a bill requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls.
A committee of House and Senate members agreed Wednesday to limit the bill to photo IDs but nixed a two-week window of early voting before Election Day. The compromise bill now goes back to the House and Senate for a final vote before heading to the governor's desk.
Republicans say the photo ID requirement assures voter integrity. Democrats say it will suppress the votes of minority, disabled and elderly residents.
The bill allows adults who don't have a driver's license to get a free photo ID. But Democrats say that will cost taxpayers and be burdensome for voters.
Democratic Sen. John Scott of Columbia refused to sign the conference report.
