SURFSIDE BEACH -- Highway Patrol says 6 people were taken to the hospital after a crash on Highway 17 By-pass at Glenns Bay Road in Horry County.

It happened just before 1 p.m.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sonny Collins says the driver of an Avalanche was driving north on Highway 17 and ran a red light, hitting a Buick which was turning onto Glenns Bay from 17. The Avalanche and the Buick then hit a third car sitting on Glenns Bay Road.

The driver of the Avalanche was charged with disregarding a traffic signal.

At 2:30 p.m., traffic was still backed up in all four directions. Northbound traffic on the By-pass was backed up at least one mile.

No specific details about the injuries have been released.
