CAROLINA FOREST -- Scott Hawkins with the South Carolina Forestry Commission says a fire in the Carolina Forest area of Horry County remains contained.

Forestry investigators are on scene Monday morning trying to figure out where the fire started and what caused it.  They haven't ruled out a lightning strike. The fire is still smoldering and smoke is visible in the area.

The fire started off Sunday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. on International Drive, and burned 43 acres.  About an hour later, additional units from across the state were called in to help.

No structures were damaged.  The fire that burned Sunday is near the site of the 2009 wildfire that torched 76 homes and burned 19,000 acres. That thought was on many minds as firefighters worked to get the fire under control.

Hawkins says the afternoon is peak time for wild fires because winds are at their strongest, ground fuel is at its driest, and people are most active.
