The Palmetto State Rollergirls are building interest in the sport of roller derby in the Myrtle Beach area. They have a roster of 23 skaters who are out to compete, have fun and give back to the community.
The Rollergirls play a ten game schedule. They have a record of 1-1 as they begin their sixth season of play. Their next home game is scheduled for April 9th at theJ. Bryan Floyd Rec Center in North Myrtle Beach.
The skaters are bank tellers, teachers and graphics design professionals by day. When they go out on the track, they all take on nicknames like "Scream Weaver", "Punk Blocker" and "The Tart of Darkness."
They are governed by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. The object of the game is simple. Each team has four blockers and two jammers. Each of the jammers circle the track and try to pass their opponents to score points. The action is rough and that's what brings hundreds of fans out to watch the Palmetto State Rollergirls compete.
Proceeds from their bouts all go to charity. So far, they've donated to causes including the Special Olympics and for hurricane victims.
